Things I Lost In The Crash
the story goes: i tried to install linux, and i pressed buttons assuming that, like windows, linux had idiot-proofing measures, but unfortunately, this was not true. i ended up bricking my HDD irreparably, stated dead on arrival to the tech guy.
an unorganized list of things i will not get back.
- my cohost archive
- my video game saves (my 24-out-of-25 ribbon banette in sapphire, my shinies in emerald...)
- art archives from 2021-2025 (i saved everything from before that, though)
- ancient music downloads
- lots of program-specific settings
- old references, resources, guides
- my entire 3d art archive - all the way back to 2015!
- art that i never posted publically
- beta versions of games i never finished
- photos i dont have backed up anymore for space reasons
- my archive of funny or notable posts and videos ("hey, do you have that video where...." "yes, i do!")
i feel it worth mentioning the things i was able to retain, though...
- this entire website (github ftw)
- my art archives, as early as i could find up to 2020
- my entire password database (whew!)
- my library of personally scanned and curated textures going back to 2011
- two or three 3d model files that friends had saved for me
- most of my music library (soulseek is the real MVP)
- most of the apps and programs i had installed
- more recent photographs
- more recent artwork
- my twitter archives for all four of my accounts
- the rest of my computer parts (only the hard drive was bricked!)
so, i must say, with emphasis: back up everything you love, at least two copies. it is worth buying a couple 32gb flash drives and storing essentials on them, in addition to a couple other things like github or google drive. update these backups at least twice a year. for the love of god. it's worth spending a few dollars on those flash drives if nothing else.
learn from my mistakes! treasure your files! put them everywhere! in fact, use internet archive if it's something niche and not personalized, like old .exe files and the like!
